Information which you provide to us
If you use our webform to request some information, then we need you to provide a method for us to contact you.
- We will retain this information, unless you ask us to delete it. We will treat it as if you had given it to us personally.
- Please do not submit confidential or commercially sensitive information on our webform, because it is sent to us by email. We can suggest better methods if you want to send us information securely.

If you find a cookie on your computer which seems to come from us, then there are several possibilites :
- A long time ago, we had a cookie to allow the user to change the display of the site. It is no longer in use. We never tracked its use.
- One of our service providers once put a wrapper around the pages of our website. This happened in 2005. We no longer do business with that company.
- There may an intermediary site or service, which is interfering. This is unlikely, but possible. Normally, the secure https protocol will protect against this, but some antivirus systems, and some corporate networks, are known to intercept secure communications. Please contact us if you think this is the case.
No tracking
We do not track your use of our website.
Our webserver does record some basic data :
- the public IP address of computers which visit
- the names of the pages and files retrieved
- the referring page or site, depending on the information provided by your web browser
- the “User Agent” string, which is normally provided by your web browser.
Sometimes we look to see which pages are popular or interesting to our visitors.
On rare occasions, we use the IP address to try to determine the origin of requests for information which seem fraudulent.
Sometimes we look to see which webcrawlers are coming to see us. For example, we are very proud to have been visited by the BNF - the French National Library.
Almost no “Third party services”
We use no third party services which we think might track you.
There are no links to Facebook, Google, Instagram, Twitter…
We do use the rather excellent MathJax system for formatting mathematical expressions. This uses javascript, and may install some cookies from the MathJax delivery system. We believe that neither the MathJax organisation, nor their content delivery network, perform any tracking. If you believe otherwise, please tell us.
If you are concerned, all of the website should work without cookies, and also without javascript, except that some of the mathematics formatting may be lost.
